| It's time to start thinking about football and cheerleading as the Ramona Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading organization is holding registration soon.
Established in 1929, Pop Warner Little Scholars Inc. is a nonprofit organization that offers youngsters an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of football and cheerleading worldwide. With just over 360,000 participants, it is the largest youth football/cheer program in the United States.
Pop Warner's mission is, "To enable children to benefit from participation in team sports and activities in
a safe and structured environment...the program teaches fundamental values, skills and knowledge that children will use throughout their lives."
Its success is due in large part to faithful supporters: volunteers and from and the organizations commitment to education, one of the requirements for eligibility and the only grounds for an individual to receive an award. Trophy presentations and team celebrations are held at the end of the season where all participants are recognized.
Ramona Pop Warner Board of Director President Ben Narramore invites the public to attend the annual fundraiser "Walk-a-thon" on Saturday, Aug. 18. Narramore also says the group is still looking for community sponsors.
Registration for football is open to the public and each division has age, weight and academic qualifications. Space is limited; players are encouraged to sign up early. Registration is held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays at Bulldawg Stadium, 720 9th St. on April 14, April 28 and May 12. The season begins on Wednesday, Aug. 1.
